iZone Racing Driver Training Centre
CardioWall Pro-X helps hone racing driver skills at iZone, Silverstone.
The iZone Driver Performance Centre is the UK’s leading motor racing driver training facility. It houses one of the first gyms to install a CardioWall Pro-X, the version of the CardioWall® designed specifically for elite athletes. Kevin Hoyes, iZone Gym Manager, has been putting drivers through their paces, using the Pro-X to develop mental alertness, peripheral vision, hand-eye coordination, cardiovascular fitness and improved reactions.
In this case study, Kevin talks through some of the key ways in which the Pro-X benefits driver training.
"Our mission at the iZone is to train drivers – from novices to World Champions – to be the best they can be. We work with them to make sure they have the skills, stamina and fitness to perform at their very best on the racing track. Our training facility at the Silverstone circuit is state of the art and includes a gym customised for motorsports training – the CardioWall Pro-X is now an integral part of this."

“Be the Best You Can Be”
“Our mission at the iZone is to train drivers – from novices to World Champions – to be the best they can be,” said Kevin. “We work with them to make sure they have the skills, stamina and fitness to perform at their very best on the racing track. Our training facility at the Silverstone circuit is state of the art and includes a gym customised for motorsports training – the CardioWall Pro-X is now an integral part of this."
The Pro-X Difference
The Pro-X features 14 light pods, many positioned just out of reach and on the edge of peripheral vision for the athlete. It develops reaction speed, co-ordination, balance and agility; the real-time FitMakr Pro data display shows score, timings and strike profile, and even shows left / right and high/low bias, enabling athletes to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses, and to benchmark and track their performance across time.
“The CardioWall is unique for us and it really helps engage our drivers,” Kevin continued. “The competitive element of the CardioWall adds an extra dimension which motivates the driver and helps to assess and train reactions, peripheral vision and co-ordination which would be overlooked in traditional training programmes."
Getting on Pole Position
All iZone gym users – from up and coming karters to professional racing drivers – record their scores – and the top 20 make it onto the Pro-X leaderboard. “Drivers are really competitive so everyone wants to get on the pole position on the leaderboard,” said Kevin. “They always want to come back and to try to improve their scores and beat their team-mates. This is fantastic for us because they’re improving core skills and fitness at the same time. It also takes hard work and determination to get to the top of the leaderboard and this is exactly we want to see from our drivers."
Flexible and Versatile Training Routines
“The CardioWall Pro-X is a great addition to our gym as it offers so much flexibility and versatility to the training programmes,” added Kevin. “We set different programmes to work on the different areas and we use it in conjunction with other tools and equipment, including the racing simulators.”
One of the main uses is for warming up drivers both physically and mentally. “When a driver is using the simulator, they come here early, they use the CardioWall first,” said Kevin. “This way they’re able to perform to their best from the very beginning.”
For fitness training, Kevin uses the ClusterShot program for its high intensity and cardiovascular benefits, plus hand-eye coordination. “Using different accessories emphasises different skills and aspects of fitness training. We use boxing gloves if we’re going for really fast hand speed, or hand-held weights if we want to make the session tougher on the upper body, working on the muscular endurance,” he added.
He also uses the Chaser program to focus on reaction speeds and improving peripheral vision. “Peripheral vision is particularly important. While drivers need to focus on a certain point, such as an upcoming corner, they’ve also got to be aware of what’s going on around them. When playing CardioWall you’ve got to trust your peripheral vision to hit all the pods as their lights come on.”
How effective is the Pro-X in helping drivers be the "best they can be?"
Kevin’s verdict is a positive one: “It incorporates many of the key training elements which a racing driver will be focusing on in addition to traditional training techniques,” he confirmed. “All in all, it’s an excellent piece of equipment and has become an integral part of our gym."
